Among all military chiefs, Erwin Rommel occupies a predominant role  in the historiography of the Second World War. With victories in France and Libya to his credit, Rommel was considered one of the Wehrmacht’s best generals, and also one of Hitler’s favourites.

Nazi propaganda portrayed him as an idol capable, alone, of overturning the course of any battle. The Allies were quick to fear and respect him. But who really  was Rommel, and what were his true links with the Nazi regime and its leader?
